Frequently Asked Questions:
What sports are available for scholarships?
Baseball, basketball, cross country, fencing, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
What is SAT/ACT?
Standard Academic Testing is required for all student athletes who would like to attend an American University or College in Division I, II, III or NAIA and is used for admissions only. This test consists of Math and English.
Students must meet minimum requirements of these tests for the NCAA Eligibility Center and to meet individual college requirements.
What is SAT II?
Is a subject specific exam. Ex: French, math, biology etc.
This subject test is a requirement by some selective universities.
When should I take the SAT?
Most student athletes should attempt to take the SAT in grade 11 fall term. It is suggested that the student athlete take the test 3 times.
If I am an Athlete in Grade 12 is it too late?
It is NEVER too late but we must act NOW.
What is AP?
Advanced placement classes offered by a high school. College-level classes. Placement of a college freshman in an advanced class based on work completed in high school.
What is the NCAA Eligibility Center/Clearing House?
The organization responsible for certifying the academic eligibility for practice, competition, and financial aid of all prospective student athletes for Division I and II.
You MUST be registered.
What is Core Courses?
Highschool classes required by the NCAA initial Eligibility Clearing House. These include English, Math, Natural/Physical Science, Social Science, Foreign Languages, Religion or Philosophy.
What is a Dead Period?
Periods of time when it is not permissible for coaches to make in person recruiting contacts or official or unofficial visits.
What is Early Action?
Early action is a non binding contract plan that allows the student athlete to submit his or her application in early fall (usually by Nov.1 -15) to his or her favorite University of choice. You may only choose one University.
As a Canadian can I apply for financial aid?
NO. But you may apply for bursaries, grants and other scholarship opportunities.
Can I work while attending school?
Yes. Many colleges provide jobs to undergraduate students, allowing them to earn money to pay education expenses.
What is NAIA?
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics is a separate association of colleges who compete in Intercollegiate Athletics. There are more than 1,280 colleges or universities in this organization.
What is NLI?
The National Letter of Intent is a legal, binding contract in which a student athlete agrees to attend a college for one academic year. In return, a college agrees to provide the student with athletics related financial aid for one year.
What is Title IX (Nine)?
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 specify that, “No person in the United States shall, on the bases of sex be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.â€
(There are many female athletic scholarships that go unused every year.)
Is my verbal commitment binding?
A verbal commitment is NOT binding but is a generally accepted form of commitment.
